1922 and the transnational history of Greeks in Canada

On Wednesday 5 July the Institute will host its final lecture of the 2022-2023 academic year. In the context of the exhibition "Παράγκες: Catastrophe and Creation" currently on display at the Institute, this will be an in-person lecture in the auditorium of the Institute’s premises at Orminiou 3A, Ilisia. [Metro: Megaro Mousikis or Evangelismos.]

Starting at 19.00, Dr. Sakis Gekas (Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair, York University) will deliver a paper entitled, Migrants, refugees, and the first Greek Canadians. 1922 and the transnational history of Greeks in Canada.

1922 is not often associated with migration to North America and Canada in particular. This presentation will connect the histories that shaped the migrant experience profoundly in the intersection between politics in Canada and homeland politics. In this transnational history of Greeks in Canada, the 1890s-1930s period and 1922 in particular signaled the transition of Greeks from migrants to refugees.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Institute for what promises to be a fascinating presentation.
