L’école d’été de l’ICG commence! / The CIG Summer School Begins!

L’arrivée de l’été marque le lancement de la nouvelle édition de l’École d’été en Grèce, organisée par l’Institut Canadien en Grèce! Avec la popularité continuellement grandissante du programme, plus d’une centaine d’étudiant•es au total ont sauté sur cette occasion extraordinaire cette année, afin de découvrir et de s’immerger dans la culture et l’histoire grecques. 

Another year, another Summer School season hosted by the Canadian Institute in Greece! With the popularity growing each and every year, students took advantage of this amazing opportunity, and the spots filled up fast! 

En effet, au cours du mois de mai, quatre groupes d’étudiant•es s’envoleront vers la Grèce le temps de 3 semaines. Deux groupes francophones prendront part à l’itinéraire Attique-Péloponnèse, avec un total de 83 étudiant•es. Ces deux groupes ont pu tour à tour assister à des cours magistraux dans les locaux de l’Institut canadien, et visiter de nombreux sites archéologiques et musées dans la ville d’Athènes.

With four summer schools, of 3 weeks each, in motion, we are beginning the season with the two Francophone Attic-Peloponnese groups!  These two groups, with a total of 83 students, are held simultaneously with each group taking turns learning within the classroom at the Canadian Institute's headquarters before visiting the various sites in Athens! 

La première semaine a débutée avec une agréable promenade dans les rues d’Athènes, suivie d’un souper traditionnel de mézés à la taverne «Klimataria», située dans le coeur historique de la ville.

Week one had a magnificent start with a guided visit around Athens and supper at the amazing "Klimataria" located near the central market of Athens! 

À l’occasion de la visite de l’île d’Égine, les deux groupes se sont réunis pour y découvrir le magnifique temple d’Aphaia, avec sa vue panoramique, ainsi que ses fameux produits de la pistache!

Day two saw both groups already going to the Island of Aegina, the land of Pistachios, where they visited the Temple of Aphaia high up in the mountains. 

Le troisième jour, l’émerveillement et l’enthousiasme était palpable lors de la visite de l’Acropole. Le Parthénon, dominant par sa taille et son histoire, les grandioses Propylées, et la richesse architecturale de l’Érechteion et ses caryatides n’ont évidemment pas déçu les étudiant•es. 

If the excited chatter hadn't given it away, the glee in the student's eyes would have told of their excitement to hike the Acropolis on day 3. The scale of the Parthenon, Propylon, and the Erechtheion thoroughly impressed them, and they came down with their expectations fulfilled.

Le 4 mai, le groupe 1 a visité les agoras grecque et romaine, tandis que le groupe 2 a découvert l’art byzantin au Musée byzantin et chrétien.

Saturday, May 4th, saw the split of both groups. Group 1 visited both Greek and Roman agorae thoroughly fascinated by their many differences in term of buildings and organization. Group 2 visited the Byzantine museum, allowing the students to have a sneak peak of the Byzantine sites that will be visited during the Peloponnese portion of the trip. 

Le Dimanche, les étudiant•es étaient une libres et ont pu vivre l’expérience unique de la Pâque orthodoxe et ses traditions.

While Sunday was a free day, these two groups also had the chance of a lifetime! The first weekend of the Summer School corresponded Orthodox Easter. Thus, the students had the chance to witness it in the heart of Athens with its incredible traditions!
